Applying solution-focused therapy in psychiatric practise

mit P. Panayotov

An advanced seminar for students in the second phase of the Systemic Therapy training program.

What happens when Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is brought into psychiatric practice? In this seminar, an experienced Bulgarian psychiatrist shares his innovative application of SFBT in working with people experiencing severe mental health conditions. Participants will explore practical interventions, clinical cases, and the therapeutic stance that makes solution-focused work possible and useful even in complex psychiatric settings.

Having trained directly with Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg at their Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, the presenter also offers personal stories and reflections from their time together, providing a unique perspective on the origins, philosophy, and continuing evolution of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy.

Topics include:

  • Applying SFBT in psychiatric settings
  • Solution-focused conversations with people experiencing severe mental illness and their relatives
  • Clinical cases and practical interventions
  • Improving medication compliance/adherence through SF conversations
  • The therapeutic stance in complex contexts
  • Personal stories and lessons from Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg
  • Questions from the participants, asked in advance and on-site
